Definitely a very tough call to make.

The end of October is 6 months away and that is a very short amount of time to put the event together, get people to register, process dealers, etc. With too much uncertainty from the state, this has pretty much ended up being a go or no go kind of decision

Speaking as a staff member at multiple furry conventions, I can also say that the "too early to tell" argument is an uninformed and easily countered one.

Planning an event of this scale means months of preparation and planning every year, especially when moving to a new venue. With this level of uncertainty at play, there is too much at stake. Energy needs to be directed toward either fundraising to keep the con and its supported charities alive, or toward running the event itself. But that energy needs to be focused entirely in one direction or the other. It cannot be split. With that in mind, there is no way to make an informed decision when it's "close enough to tell", because that energy and time needs to be allocated in the right direction far before then.

I can't speak for Furpoc or really any con because I don't make these decisions in any capacity whatsoever, this is my own opining so don't take my word as any sort of official statement. Hell, I'm honestly going off of what I've seen in the past year on twitter with what I'm about to say.

But the COVID-19 pandemic is giving us an absolutely unprecedented situation. As long as the convention doesn't run afoul of any contracts in place, not postponing is more likely to kill the convention than doing so.

Let me very honest here. COVID-19 has been compared to the flu, and our nation wasn't prepared for that strain. The fact the we are rebounding this early is a good sign. There are much worse diseases and viruses out there, and they could be much more impactful and damaging. The fact that it'll take roughly 1½ - 2 years for a mostly or full recovery shows resilience of our economy. We cannot afford to be reckless, or it'll prolong the suffering. We gotra keep hitting those benchmarks, and by the time next fall comes, this viral outbreak will be put behind us.

There was global infrastructure that did spread it. That was the us army and WW1. Patient zero was in Kansas. My take: being told "it's just two weeks to flatten the curve" and then having to be in a personal immunocompromised lockdown for a year has made me a lot more selfish. Like, I'm literally sitting in my room watching people NGAF for months in groups, no masks, etc. I'm vaccinated now. New England has some of the top vaccination rates in the entire country. We are reopening. I'm Done with a capital D with stuff being shut down. At this time there is no forthcoming evidence that the lockdowns were more effective than not, and furpoc wouldnt have been until October. This decision could have been postponed until 2 weeks into June to see what a memorial day spike will look like.

Ultimately, our decision to not move forward with a 2021 event had many factors. Several of which are completely out of our control. Just the financial burden alone of planning an in person even that may not be able to happen can easily kill a con. There's lots of non-refundable expenses that need to get made months in advance in order to happen in person.

I still had to work in-person at a grocery store through it all. So I couldn't see my local friends (because immunocompromised friends), couldn't see my family because of comorbidities, and spent 5 days a week wondering if today was the day I was gonna catch it & spread it amongst my coworkers. Then got dicked around over the vaccines because my prioritization group was the next one, then the state went to age-based and I ended up in the last group.

Even with all that, I'm not all that upset about 2021 getting post-poned. It was my default assumption as to what was going to happen because event planning is an extremely complicated affair. If the hosting venue doesn't let enough people in (either due to their own policies or state mandates), the con doesn't break even and we lose it forever. There's already multiple cons that were put into that situation. I'd rather my favorite local con play it safe and *not* risk going under because there's a lot more years in my future to go enjoy them.

As much as I love full fursuits, I don’t think could ever do a full suit. I feel like I’d die from heat stroke within a half hour. Most events are being forced into happening by their venues. We're fortunate enough to have a hotel that's willing to work with us to ensure a successful first event. Rest assured, we still have a contract in place for furpoc at the Crowne Plaza Stamford. They're just as eager as we are to ensure our first year is as successful as could be!

There's a lot of preparation that goes into running a convention both on the con and venue side. And we can't operate on rumors of what the current restrictions may be in the future. We can only operate with the current restrictions at the time.

Yeah, it's a bummer to not have an in person con this year, but at the same time, it gives us the opportunity to ensure our first year back is the best it can possibly be!

Mmh. No, I've tried (a few, not many) body washes as shampoos, and my hair usually doesn't feel as clean. Going Shampoo *as* body wash instead, that feels cleaner to me.
